Thankfully & Sincerely: F&M is Here

2011/08/30

“Wish you were here.”

If you can think of a better term to invoke nostalgia, you’re a better thinker than I. It’s something people say when they miss someone, it’s the name of a Pink Floyd song, and it’s the title of the new F&M album.

And like it or not, nostalgia is something that a lot of people are going to be feeling over the next little while. With the 10 year anniversary of the attacks of 11 September 2001 only days away, self and societal-reflection over the past decade has already begun – its probably filling up your twitter feed, facebook statuses, and maybe even your thoughts.

As people look back, however, they can also look forward – and that’s exactly what F&M’s Rebecca and Ryan Anderson have done on their new album. Not only do they revisit three of their earlier songs, “Amsterdam,” “Walk to You,” and “I Pray for the Fog,” they create a beautiful rendition of the outlaw tragedy “Streets of Laredo.” The new music starts the album with “Music by the Sea” and “Old Photographs” and finishes it with “Goodnight” and “I Wish You were Here.” The blend connects the listener to a past seen in a new light, and leaves them pondering the future.

The Andersons, aided by Bryan Miot Reichert,  who all together could make soup from a stone, instill a depth of emotions that leaves the listener in a daze, and yet somehow refreshed. They also make blog writers compose extremely cheesy sentences, which is a power not many superheroes even have.

Oh, and speaking of nostalgia, 11 September 2011 also marks the 10 year anniversary of Nickelback’s Silver Side Up album, which of course, contained the single “How you Remind Me.”

Instead of getting out your old records from those ol’ boys from Hanna, Alberta – give F&M’s new album a listen. Coincidentally, it comes out today. Years from now, it won’t be a decision you look back with anything but warmth.

F&M wear their hearts on their album sleeve

2010/11/16

When people finish graduate work in history, they usually get a job at a university…or a library…or heck,  they could just write a blog. But every so often, or at least this once – a history graduate will use the topic of their thesis to help inform their own songwriting and performing. It helps, of course, when the subject of your thesis was a Soviet rockstar.

It’s New Album Release Day again, and F&M are back with a new album today called Sincerely, F&M. I know what you’re wondering and yes – it comes with its very own winelist.

I sat down in Internetland with F&M frontlady (and history graduate) Rebecca Anderson to ask her about the new album, touring across Canada, and a guy that she learned about back in the USSR.

Choose Your Own Wool on Wolves Adventure!

2010/11/09

To begin, please sing the following words to the tune of “Sweet Jane” by the Velvet Underground.

Tom, he is a family man, and Kevin…he’s a Jack of all Trades. Brody, he’s a really good question, and Gord, he’s a geophysi…cist. Huh. Eric, well he’s satisfied…and, you know, overprescribed…

[skip a few bars of the song here]

…and when they come home from work…

…They’re Wool on Wolves. And they’ve got a new album out. Today. Tuesday 9 November 2010. Oh, and if you haven’t already – you can stop singing the song now, cheers.

I sat down with Wool on Wolves in the real world to ask ’em about what it’s like being part of the Edmonton music milieu, finding a fine balance, and of course…what they like about music…

2010/06/21

So just in case you don’t  already know about the CBC Radio 3 website, I’ve written this handy blog post. The website is cool because:

1) It lets you listen to CBC Radio 3 online.

2) It’s the Home of Independent Canadian Music. (TM)

3) Bands can put their music up on their very own page.

4) Bands can put everything else you can think of – from upcoming gigs, to other band info – up on their very own page.

5) The website has a blog where people can post the latest news and gossip.

6) You can listen to music by your favorite acts whenever you want.

7) You can be exposed to new music by independent acts whenever you want.

8) I have a member page with a sampling of some of the artists you can find on the website.

9) You can find my member page right here: here!
