Different Ways of Mending

2014/10/12

Edmonton’s F&M just released a music video!

“And We Will Mend Our Broken Hearts,” off the upcoming album At Sunset We Sing, has it all. Inspiration from Andrei Tarkovsky‘s classic Soviet film Stalker? Check. Fancy clothes and cool haircuts? Double check! Wine? OF COURSE. And even a drone, being used for the power of good.

F&M worked with Highwire Films‘ Mike Robertson on the video, using the vivid settings to create a story with living pictures instead of acting. They also teamed up with Riley McElheran. At 14, he’s the youngest pilot in Edmonton’s Radio Control Society. Not to give away any spoilers, but Riley flies a drone for the spectacular end shot of the video. Oh, and there’s intrigue, revenge, and oh yeah, no spoilers.

Here’s the video!

North by Edmonton

2012/06/12

Everybody is rushing to Toronto’s North by Northeast Festivals and Conference this week. Almost 800 bands are performing at all the great venues around the CN Tower. Sure, there will be lots of  musicians from the GTA, but there’s also talented folks from all over the world hitting the stages. Edmonton is no exception. Here’s a preview of the 4 acts headed out east from the North by Northwest.

Hurry! We’re on in 5 minutes!

Edmonton is my Jam

2012/03/05

Say, have you heard about the new website, This is my Jam?

Don’t pull a Ron Burgundy and be fooled by the question mark I added in – it actually has a very descriptive name. All you have to do is join the site, pick a song you want to tell people about – and it becomes “your jam” for up to a week. Then you pick a new one. Since I’m lucky enough to have friends with their fingers on the pulse of stuff that’s hip, I found out about the site and started jammin’ about a month ago.

A very good, yet different kind, of jam.

Now that I’m getting the hang of it, I’ve decided all my new jams will have something in common: they’ll all be by bands from Edmonton. There’s so much cool stuff going on in the music scene here, it would be a silly shame not to showcase some of the songs, and use alliteration whenever possible.

Thankfully & Sincerely: F&M is Here

2011/08/30

“Wish you were here.”

If you can think of a better term to invoke nostalgia, you’re a better thinker than I. It’s something people say when they miss someone, it’s the name of a Pink Floyd song, and it’s the title of the new F&M album.

And like it or not, nostalgia is something that a lot of people are going to be feeling over the next little while. With the 10 year anniversary of the attacks of 11 September 2001 only days away, self and societal-reflection over the past decade has already begun – its probably filling up your twitter feed, facebook statuses, and maybe even your thoughts.

As people look back, however, they can also look forward – and that’s exactly what F&M’s Rebecca and Ryan Anderson have done on their new album. Not only do they revisit three of their earlier songs, “Amsterdam,” “Walk to You,” and “I Pray for the Fog,” they create a beautiful rendition of the outlaw tragedy “Streets of Laredo.” The new music starts the album with “Music by the Sea” and “Old Photographs” and finishes it with “Goodnight” and “I Wish You were Here.” The blend connects the listener to a past seen in a new light, and leaves them pondering the future.

The Andersons, aided by Bryan Miot Reichert,  who all together could make soup from a stone, instill a depth of emotions that leaves the listener in a daze, and yet somehow refreshed. They also make blog writers compose extremely cheesy sentences, which is a power not many superheroes even have.

Oh, and speaking of nostalgia, 11 September 2011 also marks the 10 year anniversary of Nickelback’s Silver Side Up album, which of course, contained the single “How you Remind Me.”

Instead of getting out your old records from those ol’ boys from Hanna, Alberta – give F&M’s new album a listen. Coincidentally, it comes out today. Years from now, it won’t be a decision you look back with anything but warmth.
