The best history lesson I got in 2012, (outside of reading my friend’s thesis) was at Fort Walsh in south-western Saskatchewan. In 1880, Fort Walsh had 200 men serving the Northwest Mounted police, Edmonton had a population of 400 and Calgary did not exist. It was re-created by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to exact dimensions in the exact location it stood when it received the first nation refugees after little big horn. A must see, bone chilling experience if you find yourself in the beautiful Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park.
