Edmonton Musicians Hit the Open Sky

Edmonton’s Open Sky Music Festival is this weekend, and the line-up of musicians is diverse, first-rate, and lots of different acronyms for awesome. Chali 2na from Jurassic 5 is headlining the opening night on Friday, and then there’s, you know, THE WAILERS playing Saturday, and Hey Ocean on Sunday.

This surf rock, reggae and roots festival isn’t just bringing in top performers from across the world, but they’ve also enlisted a crack team of local musicians to hit the stage. This A-Team of Edmonton talent will fit right in with the big names from out of town. Here’s a preview:

Souljah Fyah plays Friday night at 6:15. Being, the premier reggae band from Edmonton, it seems like they’ve attracted some pretty big attention in the rest of Canada. Or else maybe it’s just coincidence they’ve been nominated for Junos and have a Western Canadian Music Award under their belt.

The Collective West plays Saturday at high noon, or as some call it, 12:00. An Edmonton super-group who formed because everyone in the band gets along so well, The Collective West somehow keep getting better every time they play. And if you’ve seen them perform, you know that rate of improvement is quite a tall order.

Scott Cook and the Long Weekends play Sunday at 1:00 in the afternoon, or as some call it, extra-high noon. Gather around the stage for stories of community, ramblin’, and the important things in life. And when watching their set, try and remember you’re at a festival, and not huddled around the fire with some good friends.

Wool on Wolves play Sunday at 2:00. These guys haven’t played a show in Edmonton for a really long time, since they’ve been busy recording a new album. For those able to wikileak the band’s new music, they’ve heard stuff that’ll have you toe-tappin’ and dropping your jaw at the same time.

The Open Sky Music Festival runs June 8-10th at the Heritage Amphitheatre at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton. There’s lots of other phenomenal artists playing, and you can see the entire schedule here: http://www.openskymusicfestival.com/schedule.php
